Editorial Policy
Glensburg Cities Institute is committed to Accuracy, Independence, and Professional Ethics in conducting and disseminating urban research.
Mission & Scope
The content published on Glensburg.co.za serves a dual public interest role: it aims to clarify the regulatory landscape of South African town planning while promoting urban innovation. Our editorial work is categorized into two main areas:
- Regulatory Analysis (Glensburg Town Planners): This includes technical guidance on SPLUMA, NBR, and Municipal By-laws, crafted by our team of professional planners.
- Urban Research (Glensburg Cities Institute): This encompasses long-form policy research, historical backgrounders, reports and market commentaries, all produced by our Glensburg Cities Institute team..
Institutional Authorship & Credentials
Articles on this platform are published under the institutional byline of Glensburg Town Planners or Glensburg Cities Institute. These are not pseudonyms for a single writer but rather designations that represent the collective output of our professional team. We utilise this model of collective authorship to ensure that each piece of analysis reflects a peer-reviewed professional consensus, rather than a subjective individual opinion.
- All content is overseen by accredited Town Planners registered with the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN).
- Our editorial process strictly adheres to the ethical standards prescribed by the Planning Profession Act 36 of 2002.
Content Classifications
To promote transparency, we classify our content into distinct categories, enabling readers to easily identify whether they are engaging with a factual article, a guide, or an opinion piece.
- Briefings (News): These are timely, factual updates on recent announcements, gazetted notices, or municipal service alerts.
- Explainers (Analysis): Educational guides designed to break down policies, legislation, or procedures (e.g., “How Rezoning Works”).
- Backgrounders (Context): In-depth historical pieces that provide timelines of specific urban issues, serving as a permanent record.
- Commentaries (Opinion): Clearly labeled professional viewpoints from the Glensburg Cities Institute on policy effectiveness or urban trends.
- Working Papers (Discussion): Preliminary research released to stimulate professional debate and solicit expert feedback before formal peer review or final publication.
- Reports (Findings): Comprehensive, data-driven documents presenting original research, survey results, or detailed investigation outcomes to support evidence-based decision-making.
Sourcing & Verification
We adhere to a rigorous source hierarchy to ensure accuracy.
- Primary Sources: We prioritise original documentation, basing our analysis on Government Gazettes, approved Spatial Development Frameworks (SDFs), and official municipal circulars.
- Prohibited Sources: Our analysis does not rely on hearsay, social media rumours, or unverified press reports.
- Data Integrity: Statistical data from the Glensburg Cities Institute is cross-verified with StatsSA, municipal annual reports, or authenticated deeds office data before publication.
Editorial Independence & Financial Disclosure
Trust is our currency. We uphold a strict separation between our commercial interests and our editorial analysis.
- No “Pay for Play”: We do not accept payments from developers, municipalities, or estate agents to feature specific projects or to endorse particular policies in our editorial content.
- Conflict of Interest: Although our planners are active market participants, we refrain from publishing analyses on specific land parcels where Glensburg (Pty) Ltd or its principals have a direct financial interest, unless explicitly disclosed.
- Client Neutrality: Our evaluation of municipal performance remains objective and is not swayed by our consulting relationships with various municipalities.
Corrections & Transparency
We recognise that the regulatory environment is ever-changing. Should an error be discovered, we are committed to maintain transparency.
- Factual Errors: We will rectify factual inaccuracies within 48 hours of confirmation. A note will be added at the end of the article stating the correction.
- Regulatory Updates: For articles where regulations have significantly evolved over time, we will include an “Editor’s Note” at the top of the page to indicate that the content is either archived or updated.
Use of AI & Technology
We make use of modern research tools to aggregate data on property trends and zoning changes. Nevertheless, no article is solely drafted by AI. All “actionable advice,” legal interpretations, and policy commentaries are prepared, written, and verified by human professionals to ensure nuance and accountability.
